Ultra-processed foods: the silent enemy of our health

Written by Marco Paiva
Os ultraprocessados: o inimigo silencioso da nossa saúde

You walk into a supermarket thinking you're making conscious choices.

You grab the "wholemeal" biscuits, the "fitness" cereals, the protein bar, the "light" yoghurt. It seems healthy. But the truth is uncomfortable:
much of what fills the shelves isn't real food. It's ultra-processed products. And they are becoming the greatest silent enemy of our health.

What exactly are ultra-processed foods?

Ultra-processed foods aren't just "food with sugar". They are industrial formulations. Products created in a factory, with:

  • preservatives
  • artificial flavours
  • refined oils
  • hidden sugars
  • thickeners
  • colourings
  • ingredients you wouldn't use in a normal kitchen

They were made to last, be cheap, and create a taste addiction.

The problem isn't immediate. It's cumulative.

This is the danger. No one gets sick from eating one biscuit. The problem is repeating this every day. Small daily doses of:

  • inflammation
  • blood sugar spikes
  • hormonal imbalance
  • gut stress
  • nutrient deficiency

And years later, these appear:

  • constant tiredness
  • weight gain
  • insulin resistance
  • digestive problems
  • metabolic diseases
  • increased risk of various types of cancer

Science already links high consumption of ultra-processed foods to higher mortality and chronic disease. It's not sensationalism. It's basic physiology. Your body is built from what you repeat on your plate.

The most dangerous? The "fake healthy" ones

Today, the problem is no longer just soft drinks and fast food. It's products with health marketing. Common examples:

  • "sugar-free" biscuits
  • "fitness" cereals
  • industrial granola
  • protein bars
  • fresh meals that last for weeks
  • flavoured yoghurts
  • ultra-processed vegetable sauces and creams

They seem like conscious choices. But they are still industrial formulations. They change the label. They don't change the quality.

How to reduce ultra-processed foods in your daily life (practical guide)

Simple checklist:

✅ Read the labels
If it has 15–20 ingredients or names you don't recognise, it's not real food.

✅ Be suspicious of "fit", "light", or "zero" marketing
It usually means more processing, not more health.

✅ Choose foods that would have existed 100 years ago
Vegetables, fruit, rice, fish, meat, legumes, olive oil, spices, seeds.
If your grandmother recognised it, it's food.

✅ Prioritise protein + vegetables in every meal
It helps with satiety, energy stability, and less desire for processed snacks.

✅ Avoid processed snacks
Bars, "healthy" biscuits, breakfast cereals, ready-made sauces. Save them for exceptions, not routine.

✅ Have healthy options already prepared at home
Much of the bad choices happen because of hunger + haste. If you have real food ready, you don't make bad decisions.

✅ Use freezing more
Freezing is a very old natural method. Here, no additives or preservatives are needed. And the nutrients are 100% preserved.

✅ Always ask:
Does this nourish me... or just fill me up?
Always choose something functional, real, and repeat that many times.
